How to Prevent Wrinkles

As we grow older, our skin naturally starts to lose elasticity and moisture because of decreased production of elastin and collagen. This makes the skin prone to fine lines and wrinkles. Although wrinkles they say are marks of wisdom and experience, they are not quite aesthetically pleasing. And if you are like many others who like youthfulness and all it brings about, then it is perhaps time that you do something before the wrinkles set in.

Here are some effective tips to help you prevent wrinkles from forming:

1. Protect your skin from harmful rays of the sun

As we age, the ability of the skin to retain water, the diminished production and strength of collagen, as well as the ability of the body to control inflammation – all these factors lead to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. These, in turn, are caused by the effect of the damaging rays of the sun to the skin. If you want to look youthful for much longer, make sure you exhaust all means to protect your skin from the sun. Make sure to load on sunblock every day, avoid exposure to extreme heat, and wear wide-brimmed hats. This is not to say of course, that you must keep away from sunlight – remember we need our daily dose of vitamin D.

2. Load yourself with antioxidants

Once the UV rays get absorbed by the skin, they allow the formation of unwanted free radicals, whose action encourages skin to get damaged and age. Loading up on antioxidants such as richly found in fruits like blueberries, vitamins A, C and E, will help defend your skin against the harmful action of free radicals. It is also a good idea to use creams and moisturizers which contain antioxidants as part of their ingredients.

3. Make sure to keep the skin moisturized all the time.

Dry skin paves the way to wrinkles. It is very important to ensure your skin is moisturized enough. Humidify your home during winter, and apply a good moisturizer that best fits your skin type.

4. Minimize facial expressions and squinting.

Frowning, squinting, eyebrow rising, and other exaggerated facial expressions can lead to creases which eventually become wrinkles. Yes, this might be difficult for some, but controlling facial expressions can significantly minimize unwanted facial lines.

Do not stop being happy, smiling and laughing however, as sincere happiness and joy has better anti-wrinkle effects than may be measurable. Also, make sure to wear a good pair of sunglasses to protect the delicate skin around the eyes and to prevent you from squinting.
